Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Panasonic PVDV102 MiniDV Multicam Digital Camcorder w/ 2.5" Color LCD and SD DriveCustomer Review: Had this camera for a long time... Summary: 4 Stars
... and I still love it. I purchased this camera probably 8 years ago. The purpose at that time was to continue practicing my visual style (I'd graduated from film school a few years prior), and it was more affordable than purchasing a film camera. Video scared me at the time, so even though I'd had a product with so many features, I didn't really utilize them until just a couple of years ago.
I now produce projects using my 'old' digital video camera with the help of filters, lighting, and Sony Vegas editing software, and I have to say that some of my work looks just as good as work I've seen on the film festival circuit.
Right now I am looking at prosumer camcorders for business purposes, but because of finances, I am also researching ways to enhance my user experience with the Panasonic PV-DV102 digital camera. Even if I am unable to purchase a new camera, I feel confident that with a little extra effort I can continue to produce nice looking video.
Specifically, the sound capture is better than I thought it would be - though it does annoy me that there is no microphone jack. The attached light is practically useless, which is ok for me since I always use additional lighting since enhancing the picture quality is based a lot on that lighting. I love the manual features, and am intrigued (and a little bit intimidated) by some of the special features - some of which I have yet to try out. Overall, I am still happy with my purchase.
Description of Panasonic PVDV102 MiniDV Multicam Digital Camcorder w/ 2.5" Color LCD and SD DriveCombining 1.3-megapixel stills--albeit interpolated--with a 10x optical zoom, the PV-DV102 wraps some great features in its plastic and metal body. Images are stored on SD cards (sold separately), and they can be downloaded to your computer via USB. For those that like to shoot in low-light conditions, the camcorder also features a built-in color-recording mode for those types of situations. According to Panasonic, the mode will help reduce the graininess often associated with low-light shooting. A zoom mic and a built-in light are included with the PV-DV102, along with an MPEG-4 movie system, which lets you capture compressed video clips for e-mailing to friends and family. The camcorder also features a composite video out, and, of course, IEEE 1394.
