Customer Review: Ringer switch a problem for older users

Feature bloat in modern electronics, and the attendant complexity required to use the devices, is becoming a serious impediment for older people. My in-laws got their dad a fancy new flat screen TV, and the thing had so many modes that he kept hitting the wrong buttons and it would send the unit out of TV mode and he couldn't figure out how to get back.
The problem with this unit is the ringer control. It is a toggle button through off-low-high-off. The indicator of the ring state is a tiny tiny icon in the LCD display. The older person I got it for can't figure out how to use it correctly, and so they never know if the ringer is on or not, and so many times they would be unreachable --- not a good situation for an older person. The ringer is a critical variable in the operation of the phone, but its control and state are lost in the proliferation of buttons and icons on this unit. Nothing beats a good old switch on the side of the unit whose position tells you the state of the ringer. But the engineers of this phone were not thinking of the needs of the technically challenged in this society.
My solution was to find an old tape-based answering machine in the used market.
I got this phone based on its sound ratings, but the fidelity is not that much better than an ATT I had gotten (whose defect was that it didn't blink to show messages had arrived).

Always Know Who's Calling
The KX-TS620W is call waiting caller ID compatible (requires a subscription) and requires no batteries to operate. A three-line LCD screen provides access to the name and number of the person calling, along with the date and time of their call. You can scroll through the list of the 20 most recent calls, and redial any of them with the touch of a button.
Record Messages and Memos
A digital answering system is included, which offers up to 15 minutes of tapeless recording space. Each message receives a time/date stamp, and a simple series of buttons allows you to skip, delete or save each message. You can record memos to other household members as well.
Hands-free Operation
A headset jack is located on the base, and can accommodate a standard 2.5 mm headset (available separately); a speakerphone is also located on the base, supplying you with hands-free operation. A redial button lets you quickly dial the last outgoing number, while the flash button provides access to call waiting. Handset and ringer volume controls allow you to adjust levels to your liking.
