Customer Review: Sound quality of earpiece fair to poor

We bought new wireless Panasonic Dect 6.0 KX-TG6541 phones. I bought three of these headsets, which were recommended in the Panasonic manual (page 5 under Additional/replacement accessories, if you are looking as this is not easy to find). The microphone of the headsets seem to work OK as far as I can tell.
However the earpieces of all three are less than stellar and often give muddy, somewhat muffled, or overmodulated sounds. There is no volume control on the headsets, just the one in the phone handsets themselves. Reducing the volume on the phone seems to help at times and then doesn't help at other times. Each call seems to be different in this respect. We do make sure that the phonejack of the headset is firmly seated into the portable phone as sometimes, if it is out just a bit, this can make the sound quality worse.
Perhaps some of this is owing to the fact that this model phone has a "Boost" feature that comes on automatically for weak signals. I am just not sure if the Boost feature is the issue. I think most probably that it is not. A simple experiment shows this to be the case. When I plug one of these headsets into my Verizon cell phone and answer a call I find the same muddy quality of sound with the mobile phone there as well. So I conclude that the earpieces in these headsets are just not up to the usual Panasonic quality.
If you have difficulty hearing or need to have your handsfree or to move around, a headset such as this one can be a great help. This model headset, while functional and useful, does not seem to be up to the quality I would like to see, however. If the headset had a "tone" control, I would surely adjust the base levels down and boost the treble a bit to make voice frequencies more distinct. Alas, of course, it does not have any such control, so it makes me think that this is a built in design flaw as a bandpass filter or frequency network could had been built in.
I would consider a headset again, but would probably not choose this particular model. There are other models that will work with the Panasonic KX-TG6541 such as the following Panasonic headsets KX-TCA60, KX-TCA93, KX-TCA94, and KX-TCA430. In the meantime, we continue to use them, but I would not recommend this particular headset model to anyone contemplating such a purchase.
