Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Panasonic HDCTM15 16GB Full HD CamcorderCustomer Review: Don't buy Panasonic - worst customer service EVER! Summary: 1 Stars
Got this for my son for his birthday. A few months later, he slid it off a bedside table (24") onto a carpeted (and padded) floor. Granted, this is not ideal, but I have put many electronics through worse abuse without ill effect. In this case, the camcorder quit working, and the service debacle began. Trust me - this is the condensed version of the worst customer service experience I've ever had.
My son contacted Panasonic customer service via email, told them exactly what happened and was told to ship it to the exchange center, where it would be exchanged for a re-manufactured camera. A few days after the exchange center received the camera, they sent us a letter stating that I needed to give them $45 for a diagnostic fee, and that the warranty covered parts but not labor. Over the next couple of weeks, I tried calling the exchange center probably 50 times; either the phone just rang endlessly, or it said to leave a message (which was never returned). When I eventually got through, I asked why the camera was not being exchanged as I'd been promised and was told that they would not do an exchange for that model (even though they knew the model, from the original email contact). I was told, once again, that parts would be covered under warranty, but that I had to pay $45 for diagnostics. I gave a credit card number and was told I'd be contacted in 1-2 days with a repair estimate. When I'd not been contacted after 3 days, I tried calling them back and, after 13 attempts, was able to talk with someone. Unfortunately, this person had no idea what the status of the repair was, and said she couldn't get in her computer and that the people in the repair department would not answer the phone (big surprise). She promised to call me back in a few minutes. You guessed it - no return call. The following day, on my 8th attempt, I was able to get through and was eventually told that the repair would cost $411 (I paid $329 for the camera!) and that neither parts nor labor would be covered under warranty because it had been dropped. I reminded her that I had two written correspondences from Panasonic stating that parts would be covered, at which point she began the blame game - "I didn't tell you that", or "they told you that, not me".
Anyway, my son is out a camcorder, I'm out $45 and a few weeks of frustration. I will never buy another Panasonic product.
Description of Panasonic HDCTM15 16GB Full HD CamcorderHD images contain 6x as much information as standard images. HDTV has 1,080 horizontal scan lines, SDTV has 480. That translates into much higher resolution and much finer detail. With HD images on an HDTV, pictures are so clear and sharp that you can see textures. The shift in the industry from SDTV to HDTV is well underway. For shooting once-in-a-lifetime scenes that you want to capture in full beauty, an HD camcorder is the best choice. There's nothing more disappointing than shooting a once-in-a-lifetime event on video, only to discover that the images are blurry or poorly exposed because of backlighting. Panasonic's iA helps avoid problems in difficult shooting situations by automatically making the optimal camera settings and activating certain functions. For example, iA includes AF Tracking, a new function that "locks" on and follows a subject as it moves, so images are sharply focused and properly exposed. This technology is a huge help for everyone. Panasonic's advanced O.I.S. helps suppress the effects of hand-shake as you shoot, for both motion and still images. This system uses gyrosensors to detect even tiny amounts of hand-shake, then shifts a lens and adjusts the optical axis to compensate - all at an astounding 4,000 times per second. Because the system is optical, there's minimal loss of image quality even when viewed on a large-screen TV. In addition, to shoot high-resolution still images, the normal O.I.S. Mode 1 is joined by an O.I.S. Mode 2, which has a higher stabilization capability. The O.I.S. corrective lens shifts and stabilizes the image the instant that the shutter button is pressed, to enable greater precision in stabilization. You get all the beauty and minimal blurring. The TM15 features a 16x optical zoom. You can zoom close to catch dynamic shots of distant objects. And because the zoom is optical, there's limited image degradation. Also, Panasonic's Advanced O.I.S. helps
